PREGNANCY IN ALPACAS
Pregnancy detection is the foundation of monitoring a successful breeding program. Early pregnancy diagnosis allows for timely intervention if needed and alerts you if there is more time to breed a female during the breeding season.
Pregnancy can be detected by “spit testing” over the course of several weeks and by ultrasounds of the female’s uterus.
Pregnancy can be confirmed by an ultrasound exam around 3 weeks read more...

If you are going to grow a garden (or flowers...or trees....just about anything), you need ruminant compost.
* Animals with multi-compartment stomach systems break down their diet rigorously.
* Alpaca compost is known for creating less weeds and better plants.
* It provides a slow continuous feed without "burning" your tender plants. Mix into your soil before planting or use as a side dressing.
Composted a minimum of 1 year. There will be some small rocks, but these will help with draina read more...

>Electrolytes
Am I suggesting electrolytes in the winter? Yes, I am. Here in TN, we experienced the coldest temperatures in 30 years. All I wanted was hot coffee or hot chocolate to drink after coming in from the barn. Probably by now you have seen articles about providing electrolytes to horses in the winter or warm water to your cattle, but have you thought about your alpaca or other small ruminants? Do you know how much they are dri read more...

LHSA Calliope
Breeding for 2023 is complete with 10 cria expected! We completed our 2nd ultrasounds last week, and now we wait until 2023 to see the results. Alpacas have a gestational period that averages 343 days, so it's a long wait... Our breeding program is based more on fiber statistics than color, but we certainly get a high level of cute factored in!
Our 13 cria from 2022 are growing and thriving. We are halter training now; I find alpaca much easier to train than other species. I like to begin read more...

IT TAKES FINE BLACK FIBER TO MAKE A “LITTLE BLACK DRESS”
This started as a search for an exceptional fine fibered true black herdsire, which ended at Cinders of Ricochet Ranch in 2012. Only to find that Brad & Jandy Sprouse had recently purchased half interest in him, and his date card was closed. “But we could buy offspring next year!” In 2014 we purchased 2 juvie Cinders’ daughters, GLR Phoebe and GLR Ongeleigh. These 2 females helped us win the 2015 AOA Classic Breeders cup at the AOA f read more...

Ultrasound - Can you see the cria?
Love is in the air.....and its almost Spring breeding time here at LHSA. The spreadsheets are ready and the whiteboards are clean! We map out every breeding by looking at fiber biopsy statistics, histograms, EPD's, pedigree, past results, size, temperament, and color. Realistically, we start thinking about a years breeding schedule the summer before it actually happens!
There is a lot of work put into quality breeding between alpaca. We record each step of the way from ultrasounds for f read more...
