Spring Has Sprung
Ultrasound - Can you see the cria?
Love is in the air.....and its almost Spring breeding time here at LHSA. The spreadsheets are ready and the whiteboards are clean! We map out every breeding by looking at fiber biopsy statistics, histograms, EPD's, pedigree, past results, size, temperament, and color. Realistically, we start thinking about a years breeding schedule the summer before it actually happens!
There is a lot of work put into quality breeding between alpaca. We record each step of the way from ultrasounds for follicle growth, pre-pregnancy exams, breeding observations, temperament testing (spit testing), and ultrasounds. Start to finish it is easily an 8 week process.
Shearing begins here at LHSA next week and directly after that, we will begin breeding not only for our own farm but for several of our clients.
LHSA is eagerly expecting 13 crias this year from last year's breeding program. I'm hopeful the pregnancies have held and there will be little complications. May will be an exciting month!
We have had several drop-in tours. We haven't seen this type of activity since before Covid! We love to talk about the alpacas, so visitors are welcome.
