Winding down 2021 and looking ahead to 2022
As the year comes to a close and winter is settling in, it is a good time to reflect on the whirlwind of activity that has taken place on our farm this year. We doubled our herd size over the past 12 months and added some FANTASTIC genetics to build on! We built a new building to house our males, added a shed area to our main barn, and cleared more land for pastures. We welcomed 13 new crias to our herd and made our first alpaca sales. We also met a lot of great alpaca people who have helped us tremendously!
In 2021, we participated in our first halter show season and learned a LOT. Sponsoring the two shows we attended was a great way to get our name out there and it has generated a lot of traffic to our farm page on Openherd as a result. We participated in the Suri Network and PAOBA fleece shows again this year, and our entries earned us several blue ribbons and a Spirit of the Industry Award!
We had some bumps in the road as well. We lost our beautiful Carina AND her spectacular male cria, Evan, to separate events--a month apart, which was incredibly sad and a HUGE disappointment. We also lost a beautiful male cria due to incorrect positioning during his birth, which could not be corrected in time...another sad event.
BUT--overall, the good outweighed the not-so-good and we can say that we have a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the year! We have a lot to be thankful for...and a lot to look forward to in 2022!
For now, we are taking some time to plan for the future, getting our new projects lined up for spring and hoping for another successful year to come!
Happy New Year and best wishes to all in 2022!
